Achieving a Coat of Arms - you may wish to visit the Heraldry pages first

You will have seen advertisements from companies offering to provide you with "your family's Coat of Arms". Mostly these are specious.
bullet

Arms may only belong to one person at a time. There is no such thing as "family Arms" in Scottish Heraldry

bullet

No-one has the right to display Arms without having these verified and registered ("matriculated") by the Lord Lyon King of Arms in Edinburgh

bullet

Not only is it illegal to bear Arms that have not been specifically awarded by the Lord Lyon, it is also illegal to invent Arms or to use existing or invented Arms

bullet

No two people can bear the same Arms but Arms are heritable property and can be passed on to the eldest son in each generation. Younger children inherit a right to matriculate the Arms with a slight difference and must "petition" (apply) separately

Can I petition for Arms?
bullet

Anyone who wishes to use arms personally must petition for a Grant of Arms. If you can trace your ancestry back to a direct or collateral ancestor who bore Arms, a "cadet matriculation" is possible

bullet

The ONLY way to get Arms is to obtain a Confirmation, by Letters Patent or Matriculation, from the Lord Lyon King of Arms

bullet

British and Commonwealth citizens (for example Canadians and Australians) of Scottish descent can petition the Lord Lyon King of Arms. (People of English or Welsh ancestry should contact the Garter King of Arms in London and those with Irish forebears The Chief Herald of Ireland in Dublin

bullet

Subjects of foreign countries with Scottish ancestry can apply to the Lord Lyon or cadet matriculations. If you have an armigerous relative in Scotland you can also obtain a cadet matriculation.

What do I get?
bullet

If your petition is successful (and this is not always the case!) you will receive an illuminated parchment from the Lyon Court showing your place within the family and narrating the pedigree as proved. A duplicate is recorded in the Public Register of All Arms and Bearings in Scotland and/or the Public Register of Genealogies and Birthbrieves.

Can't I do all this myself?
bullet

Of course. You can contact the Lyon Court yourself, if you have the necessary genealogical and family information to hand and in the correct format to prove your ancestry. But many people find it easier to deal through someone with right of audience. This includes Officers of Arms, Scottish solicitors holding a certificate of practice and members of the Faculty of Advocates. You may also require a genealogist who can work up your pedigree in order to provide a Schedule of Proofs.

bullet

Durie Origins can help you find the right people who can handle the matter personally on the spot, on your behalf.

What if my Petition is not successful?
bullet

No money is payable to the Lyon Court until the Arms and draft text are agreed and you have been notified of the total. However, the Durie Origins fee and any agreed expenses are payable in advance and are non-refundable.
