THE HERALDIC MEANING OF THE CRESCENTchevron.gif (3750 bytes)

bulletThe crescent is one of the "charges" or shapes used in heraldic design
bullet It could be nothing more than a symbol, or it could represent the moon
bulletIt often represents descent from a second son. In this case it is known as a "cadency"
bulletIn the case of the various Durie Arms, it presumably indicates the branch of the family descended from Abbot George Durie, who was the second son of John Durie and Janet Beaton, the eldest son being Robert Durie of that Ilk
