THE
HERALDIC MEANING OF THE SHIELD

|
 |
The
shield is the main element of any Arms. Other components are of limited value without the shield, although some may
be used independently (for instance, the motto). Often the shield is used alone
as a kind of "shorthand" for the full Arms |
 |
The shape and design of the shield may vary according to the fashion of the
times, but the designs upon it do not. Typically, the shield of a woman is oval or lozenge shaped. |
 |
The shield bears "charges" - symbols
with specific meaning. In the case of the Durie Arms given above, these are
"Argent" (silver or white) crescents
signifying a second son. The other device is a chevron. |
 |
The heraldic description of this version of a Durie Arms is: |
Azure, a chevron
argent between three crescents argent.
 |
Azure (blue) signifies loyalty. |
