The Scottish Monarchy originates from the Irish tribe, the Scotii, who settled in Dalriada (modern-day Argyll) alongside the Britons of Strathclyde and Goddodin (Lothian) and the Picts of Central and North Scotland. About 840 the House of Alpin began their harsh rule which forced the assimilation or amalgamation of the various kingdoms and tribes in Alba, the first flowering of a recognisable Scotland, establishing borders virtually unchanged for over 1000 years . The exact dates of births, deaths and periods of rule of the earlier kings are often based on folklore, bardic legend and/or wishful thinking, but later historical records are more accurate.

Frankly, Scotland has not been served well by its monarchs - we probably haven't had a decent one since the 1150s. Most of them managed to get killed in battle or murdered, leaving infants as heirs or no heirs at all, which led to internal power struggles and incessant turf wars with the English.

The monarchs and dates of their reigns are as follows. Click on the names for more detail. Each of the pages below has a genealogical table, with a consolidated version here.
